Winona Blitch

January 1, 1930 — August 23, 2021

Ellabell

Winona Hursey Blitch was born on February 1,1930 and passed away at home on August 23, 2021 at the age of 91. Winona was the daughter of Wade and Vida Hursey from Ellabell, Georgia and the last of their four children to pass away. Winona graduated from Bryan County High School in 1947 and, in the same year, married her beloved husband of 73 years, Edward J. Blitch (deceased).

Winona leaves behind five of her seven children: Dianne (Robert, deceased) Bath, Joy (Daniel) Lee, Melanie (Marc) Mickleboro, Kim (Grady) Hughes, Melissa Kight. Her two sons, Jeffrey (Donna) and Kevan preceded her in death.

Proverbs 31:25-29 (25) “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” (26) “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” (27) “She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” ((28) “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. (29) “Many women do noble things but you surpass them all. Small in statue, 4’11”, Winona was huge in the hearts of her family. Sacrificing her time and gifts to help support her family throughout her life. Standing beside her 6’4” husband, Edward, she lived a farming life. Trained well to become a farmer’s wife by her father, Wade (she could fix anything) and by her mother, Vida (she could cook or sew anything). Her talents on the farm expanded as the years passed. Bookkeeper, mechanic, tractor driver, truck driver, gardener, and veterinarian are just a few of the roles that Winona assumed over the course of her life on the farm. Her most important role was wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt to all of her family. Family came first in Winona’s life and her face would light up with joy when any of her 12 grandchild or 18 great-grandchild came to visit.  Although Winona lived on the farm all her life, she loved to travel.  She had visited 13 countries and most of the states in the United States. Hiking and spotting wildlife throughout her travels were just a few of the activities she enjoyed. Of all of the places she visited, by far her favorite place, was North Carolina and this is where she and Edward built their retreat. Outside of Black Mountain, NC, this retreat has become their legacy to their family for all to enjoy. Winona Hursey Blitch was a member of Old Fellowship Baptist Church in Stilson, GA.
