Carlton Livingston Purvis, Jr. died peacefully on July 4, 2021, at the age of 88 in Lynchburg, Virginia.  He was born in Pembroke, Georgia to the late Carlton and Celeste Purvis.

Carlton served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.  Upon his return from serving in the Navy, he graduated from Georgia Tech University with a degree in Industrial Management.  He held various sales jobs throughout his working years.  He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church with the majority of that as an active member of Mafair United Methodist Church in Kingsport, Tenn. for forty-seven years. Upon his move to Lynchburg to be closer to family, he joined Timberlake United Methodist Church.

Carlton is preceded in death by two sisters, Celeste Purvis Smith, and Jane Purvis Jackson.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan Speir Purvis; his sons, Carlton L. Purvis, III (Dora) of Lynchburg, Va. and Kevin Purvis (Susan) of Overland Park, Kan.; his daughter, Cynthia Hedrick (Danny) of Lynchburg, Va.; seven grandchildren: Alexandra Purvis Smith (Josh), Sandra Hedrick Nixon (Dylan), Abbey Hedrick, Simeon Purvis (Leah Cooley), Ransom Purvis, Gabrielle Purvis, and Erin Hedrick; one great-grandchild, Atlas Cooley; one sister, Nancy Purvis-Wells of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Pam Turpin, Patrick Daly, and the staff at Runk & Pratt, Pearls of Life Memory Care facility for their care over the last year and to his hospice nurse, Lauren, and the staff of Centra Hospice for their care over the last few months.

A memorial service will take place in Pembroke, Georgia on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Flanders Powell Funeral Home chapel at 2:00 p.m. Visitation with family will take place beginning at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Carlton’s memory to Mafair United Methodist Church in Kingsport, Tenn., Timberlake United Methodist Church in Lynchburg, Va., or Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
