It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Robert Lafayette Carnes, who passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital, on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on December 19, 1932, in Manassas, Georgia, Robert led a fulfilled life enriched with love, dedication, and generosity.
Robert proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army for two years. After his honorable service, he embarked on a long career as a Fork Lift Mechanic with Domtar. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to own and operate his own Feed and Seed store until his retirement. Many fondly remember his passion for tractors, cows, and hogs, which he lovingly spoke about with anyone who would listen.
On November 27, 1961, Robert married the love of his life, Beverly Hinman Carnes. Together, they built a life centered around family, faith, and community. Robert was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife Beverly; daughter Pam Shuman and her husband Bill; son Aden Carnes and his wife Lorie; grandchildren William A. Shuman III (Theresa), Brandy Cohrs (Sonny), and Chase Carnes (Kennedy); great-grandchildren William A. Shuman IV (Dahlia), Carl Shuman, Laurissa Shuman, Graci Shuman, Robert Cohrs (Melissa), Ethan Cohrs (Taylor), and Mikayla Cohrs; and great-great-grandchildren William A. Shuman V, James Shuman, Elia Beverly Shuman, Case Shuman, Jillian Shuman, Camille Young, Avery Cohrs, and Lucas Cohrs. He is also survived by his sisters, Oretha Blaver and Collen Nubern.
Robert was predeceased by his father, Aden Colen Carnes, mother, Ethel Bell Deas Carnes, and sisters Lucille Shuman and Beatrice Shuman.
A steadfast member of Beulah Baptist Church for over 20 years, Robert was known for his warm hospitality and generosity. A true homebody, he cherished having company and no guest ever left his house empty-handed. He especially delighted in the presence of his grandchildren, affectionately bestowing upon each of them unique nicknames.
