Rex Smith

Pembroke

Mr. Rex Smith, age 87 passed away Wednesday evening, February 13, 2019 at his home while under the care of his family and Kindred Hospice.  Mr. Smith was born in Bryan County on November 21, 1931 to the late Grady Jackson Smith and Mary Frances Smith.  He was an engineer for the Department of Transportation with over 34 years of service and served over 40 years with the Army National Guard.  Mr. Smith worked with the City of Pembroke for over 27 years, was a volunteer firefighter with Pembroke Fire Department for over 50 years and was one of the original emergency medical technicians when Bryan County started its ambulance service.  Mr. Rex was a dedicated funeral attendant at Flanders Morrison Funeral Home since 1983 and was a member of Pembroke United Methodist Church for over 67 years.  He was past president of the Pembroke Lions Club and was a member of the Pembroke United Methodist Men’s Club.  Mr. Smith loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed gardening.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Olan and Julius Smith and two sisters, Juanita Cravens and Virginia Reddick.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Nell Robinson Smith of Pembroke; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wyman and Teresa Smith of Pembroke and Keith and Tammy Smith of Pembroke; one brother, Howard Smith of Pembroke; one sister, Catherin DeLoach of Statesboro; four grandchildren, Melanie Brooke and Joey Ellis, Jessica Lynn Smith, Lindsay Nicole Smith, Shelby Paige Smith and Dahlia and Cody Bacon; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 15, 2019 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Flanders Morrison Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Flanders Morrison Funeral Home Chapel with Doctor Brad Butler and Doctor Thad Harvey officiating.

Interment will follow in Northside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Kindred Hospice.
