Black Creek- Mr. William Oscar Newman, age 95, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 at Hospice Savannah after a long illness. Mr. Newman was born Sept. 1, 1918 in Bryan County to the late William Raleigh and Tera Burnsed Newman and lived in Bryan County for his entire life. He served his country proudly in WWII as a flight engineer on the B26 bomber in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Newman was co-owner of the family sawmill business for a time, Newman Lumber Company and retired from civil service with the federal government. Mr. Newman was an avid fisherman and gardener. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking and was a skilled technician with anything mechanical. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newman was predeceased by two brothers, Jessie C. Newman and Foy G. Newman.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mrs. Blondean Smith Newman of Black Creek; two sons William Dwight Newman and Craig Oscar Newman, both of Black Creek; one daughter, Angela Newman Eason of Savannah; one sister Mary Newman Hodges of Black Creek; one brother-in-law Jerome Davis of Black Creek and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 6-9 P.M. Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 3 P.M Thursday, October 17, 2013 in the chapel of Flanders Morrison Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Lower Black Creek Cemetery with military honors. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Roland and Edwina of Hospice Savannah for their compassion and dedication and Mr. Leroy Burnsed for his assistance and special friendship. Flanders Morrison Funeral is in charge of the arrangements.
