Pembroke- Mr. Charles Lee "Dude" Strickland, Jr. age 85 died Sunday evening at Candler Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Strickland was a native and was a life-long resident of Pembroke. He was a U. S. Navy veteran having served in the Philippines and worked as engineer and project overseer for the State Highway Department from 1947- 57. Mr. Strickland continued his career as a construction superintendent until his retirement from Shuman Construction in 1986. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Pembroke and a former member of the Pembroke Jaycees. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his produce with his neighbors. He loved working in his yard, working on small engines, and especially taking care of others. Mr. Strickland was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Mrs. Gussie Denmark Strickland, parents Charlie L. and Erma Popham Strickland and his sister, Ouida Proctor.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Thomas "Tommy" and Delores Strickland of Pembroke; one brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Pat Strickland of Midland, TX; one sister, Lucy Williamson of Louisville; grandchildren Traci and Andrew Wells of Guyton, Annie and Gary Jarriel of Guyton and Tami Adams of Pembroke; three great grandchildren Emily Jarriel, and Dowson and Kinsley Hurt and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 11 A.M. Wednesday in the chapel of Flanders Morrison Funeral Home with Dr. Brad Butler and Dr. Jim Correll officiating. Interment will follow in Northside Cemetery. Flanders Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
