Mr. John Garland Bennett

Mr. John Garland Bennett, age 73, passed away at Memorial Health on Friday, March 10, 2023. Mr. Bennett was born in Savannah to the late James Alfred Bennett and Arveta Williams Bennett on June 3, 1949. He was a 1967 graduate of Bryan County High School and was drafted soon after to serve his country in the United States Navy. Mr. Bennett later worked as a Boilermaker Leaderman for over 25 years with the Savannah Shipyard and later became part owner and Vice President of Global Ship Systems for 10 years. He was a longtime member of Lawrence Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. Mr. Bennett enjoyed woodworking, playing guitar and singing in his church, deer hunting with his friends at Bay District Hunting Club, planting his garden and spending time with his family, grandchildren and great granddaughter.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Williams.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Edith Evette Dickerson Bennett; two daughters, Karey Butler and her boyfriend Neil Adams of Pembroke and Kim Jackson and her husband Maurice of Statesboro; two brothers, Edward O’Neal Bennett of Claxton and James Rickey Bennett and his wife Beth of Pembroke; five grandchildren, Justin Jackson and his wife Anna, Hilarie Jackson and her fiancé Ty, Ashlyn Butler, Grayson Butler and Jarrett Butler and great granddaughter, Virgina Jackson.

 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Lawrence Baptist Church.

 

Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Albert Hodges and Reverend Dan Bryant officiating.

 

Burial will be held at Ash Branch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers will be Chris Bennett, Mike Davis, Sheriff Mark Crowe, Troy Edenfield, Roy Gradick and Nick Swint.

 

Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of Lawrence Baptist Church.
