Joseph Purvis, Sr.

Mr. Joseph (Joe) Hopkins Purvis, Sr. age 93, passed away Friday, July 17, 2015 at Bryan County Health and Rehabilitation.  Mr. Purvis was born August 19, 1921 in Savannah, Georgia.  His parents are Florence Hopkins Purvis and Homer Lafayette Purvis.  Mr. Purvis was a graduate of Savannah High School where he excelled on both the golf and track team.  After graduation, he served in the United States Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1945.  Mr. Purvis married Mary Lou Williams Purvis on June 4, 1945, earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950, and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from John Marshall School of Law in 1975.  Mr. Purvis was a licensed realtor since 1987 and was a licensed appraiser.  Mr. Purvis also earned a certificate of completion for Photography I and small engine repair from Savannah Technical College.

Mr. Purvis was a sales engineer of valves, pipes and other related items to many industries in Savannah.  He was active at the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Coastal Daylight Masonic Lodge #750 F & AM, the Director’s Staff for the Alee Shrine, the Scottish Rite, the German Friendly Society, Navy League, Smart Seniors and the Elk’s Lodge.  Mr. Purvis was also a member of La Vida Golf Course and Black Creek Golf Club.

Mr. Purvis is predeceased by his wife of over 60 years, Mrs. Mary Lou Williams Purvis; his parents, Florence Hopkins Purvis and Homer Lafayette Purvis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed, Tom, Dave and Harriette, Charles and Vivian, John and Laura Lee and one sister, Eleanor.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Michael Macchio of Black Creek; son and daughter-in-law, Col. Joseph H. Purvis, Jr. (Ret.) and Susie Purvis of Jacksonville, Florida; five grandchildren, Sheri Biller of Camp Hill PA, Mary Waterman of Pooler, GA, LTC J. Keith Purvis and wife Jennifer of Turkey, Kevin Purvis of Bluffton, SC and Robyn Purvis Powers and husband Mike of Jacksonville, FL; 15 great-grandchildren, Christian Miller, Savanna Biller, Heaven Boelens, Hayden Olinger, Connor Waterman, Joseph K. Purvis, Jr., Jesse Purvis, Jonathan Purvis, Jeremiah Purvis, Julia Purvis, Mylan Powers, Jonah Powers, Collin Powers, Foster Powers and Levi Powers; great-great-grandchild, Kinsleigh Grace Yanna; two sister-in-laws, Lois Purvis and Marion Swinford; a special friend, Hazel Jordan and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 10 – 11 A.M. Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Funeral Service will be 11 A.M. Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Peter Hartmann officiating.

Interment will follow at Bonaventure Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
