Mrs. Joan Speir Purvis, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at Bedford Hospice House in Bedford, Virginia at the age of 92 on November 13, 2025. Joan’s life was marked by an unwavering spirit, a deep love for her faith, and a profound dedication to her family and church community.
Born on May 11, 1933, to Mamie Rahn Speir and Henry Lee Speir, Sr. in the small town of Ellabell, Georgia, Joan was the fourth of six children. From a young age, she exhibited the work ethic and warmth that would define her for the rest of her life. Joan worked tirelessly until she retired at 80 years of age. Whether tending to her family’s needs, volunteering at her local church, or simply offering a helping hand to a neighbor, she found purpose in service to others.
A woman of quiet, steadfast faith, Joan was an active member of Mafair United Methodist Church in Kingsport, Tennessee for 46 years until she moved to Lynchburg, Virginia to be closer to her children. For as long as she was able, Joan poured herself into the church, giving selflessly of her time and talents—whether helping with the children’s ministry, women’s ministry, assisting with church events and meals, or offering a kind word to those in need. She never sought the spotlight or recognition, preferring instead to work humbly behind the scenes, trusting that her service was enough. After moving to Lynchburg, she joined Timberlake Church and even though she could not serve as she had in her previous years, she still enjoyed the benefits of being a church member and the many wonderful people she met there.
Joan’s love for cooking and baking has left her family with many favorite recipes to enjoy for years to come. Her signature M&M cookies have become part of the cherished memories of all who were fortunate enough to enjoy them at every special family event.
While Joan’s work was often behind the scenes, it was never unnoticed. She taught her children and grandchildren the importance of hard work, kindness, and humility. She instilled in them a deep respect for tradition, family, and faith, and her legacy lives on through their actions and hearts.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Carlton Purvis, Jr. She is also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister.
She leaves behind two sons, Carlton Purvis (Dora) and Kevin Purvis (Susan), one daughter, Cynthia Hedrick (Danny), seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind two sisters, Olivia Harvey and Sandra McBeth (Paul).
Joan was especially devoted to her children and grandchildren. She always wanted to know what was going on in their lives, taking great joy in hearing about their accomplishments and all the little details of their everyday moments. She made it a point to stay connected, always ready with a listening ear and a word of encouragement.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the many friends, neighbors, and church members who have been a part of Joan’s life. The family also wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Centra Hospice, especially Joan’s nurse Sabrina, for the exceptional care and support provided at home during the past year. We are equally grateful to the dedicated team at Bedford Hospice House for their attentive and loving care during her final few days. Their combined kindness, respect, and comfort allowed us to navigate this difficult time with peace and dignity.
A funeral service will be held in the chapel at Flanders Powell Funeral Home in Pembroke, Georgia, on Thursday, November 20, 2025. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 1:00 PM, with the service to follow at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place at Northside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joan’s memory to Centra Hospice in Lynchburg or Bedford Hospice House.
May you rest in sweet, Southern peace, Joan. You were a treasure to all of us, and we take comfort knowing that you are at peace with your Lord and Savior.
