Joan Delores Perkins Grizzard cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, peacefully passed away on Saturday, August 15th, 2026, at the age of 87. Born in Savannah, Georgia, on February 6th, 1939, Joan demonstrated kindness, and warmth to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Before her long illness, Joan was a member of Old Fellowship Baptist Church, where she found joy in worship and friendship. She cherished the simple pleasures, especially the time spent with her beloved family.
Joan was predeceased by her loving parents, George Henry Perkins and Lila Mae Covar Perkins, and her devoted husband, James Michael Grizzard Sr., with whom she shared many wonderful years of marriage.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her surviving family: her son, James Michael Grizzard Jr., and his wife, Cynthia; her grandchildren, Joshua Michael Grizzard and Zachary Thomas Grizzard, along with his wife, Jennifer; and her great-grandchildren, Rylee Annabelle Grizzard and Walter Emmett Grizzard. Joan is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews who enriched her life.
Professionally, Joan dedicated her career to serving others as a Doctor’s Assistant, a role that brought her deep fulfillment and purpose. After leaving the professional workforce, she became a caregiver to her own family members offering compassion that left a lasting impact.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Joan enjoyed reading, travel and taking pride in her role as a family matriarch. Her grandchildren were her greatest source of happiness, and she cherished the time she spent with them.
Pallbearers honoring Joan’s life and legacy include Tommy McCorkle, Daryl McCorkle, Bart Grizzard, Keith Burkstiner, Doug Owens, and Tracey Sims.
The family will welcome friends for a visitation at Flanders Powell Funeral Home & Crematory in Pembroke, GA, on Friday, August 21st, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the same location, officiated by Rev. Tony Pagirillo. Burial will take place at Greenwich Cemetery in Savannah at 2:30 p.m. after the funeral service.

Joan’s legacy is one of love, service, and joy. Her gentle spirit and generous heart will be deeply missed, but her memory will be lovingly cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she find eternal peace.
