James Dale Steptoe Sr., a devoted father, grandfather, and beloved member of the Savannah community, passed away in Asheville, NC on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026, at the age of 65. Born on May 30th, 1960, in Savannah, GA, James retained deep roots in his hometown throughout his life.
James was a proud employee of Gazer, where he worked diligently as a yard jockey for 20 years. Known for his easy-going and laid-back nature, he had a passion for the great outdoors and spent much of his time fishing, hunting, and relishing the tranquility of nature. A true family man, he loved grilling for family gatherings and could often be found fixing things around the house. Country music was a constant soundtrack in his life, highlighting his love for simple pleasures and good company.
James was a devoted husband to the late Rhonda Gail Steptoe, with whom he shared 35 wonderful years. He was predeceased by his parents, James Edward Steptoe and Frances Wilcher Steptoe, his wife, Rhonda Steptoe, and his brother, James "Jimmy" Steptoe.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with two daughters, Amanda Diane Pittman (David) of Springfield and Christina Steptoe of Savannah; his son, James Dale Steptoe, Jr. (Suni) of Savannah; and his treasured 13 grandchildren. James is also survived by his five brothers—Willie Steptoe and Clyde Steptoe of Savannah, Eddie Steptoe of Effingham, Dennis Steptoe (Ann) of Effingham, and Robert Hickman (Stephanie) of Pooler and two sisters, Janet Jones (Donald) of Savannah and Mary Myers (Allen) of Effingham; sisters-in-law, Karen Hill (Robert), Judy Babb (Joey), Pam Roman (Steve). He spent the last few months of his life with Melodie Criswell, who loved and cared for him until his passing. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also mourn his passing and celebrate his life.
Visitation will be held at Flanders Powell Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, February 17th, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
A funeral service will follow in the Flanders Powell Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 pm.
He will be laid to rest at Northside Cemetery.
James Dale Steptoe Sr. will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his gentle spirit, and his passion for life. Though he has left this world, his memory and the impact he made on the lives of those around him will endure.
