James "Jim" Lewis Kuhns, a devoted family man and respected member of the Savannah community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the age of 76. Born in Albion, New York, to the late Robert Palmer Kuhns and Lela Mae Lewis Kuhns, Jim eventually moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he built a life filled with love, service, and passion.
Jim was the beloved husband of Gwen Kuhns for 54 wonderful years. Together, they nurtured a strong and loving family, raising four children: Jennie Dimick (Donnie), Tina Schreiber (Mark), Julie Steiger (Jeff), and Jeffery Kuhns (Shari). Jim's legacy extends to his cherished grandchildren, Griffin Kuhns and Sam and Ellie Schreiber, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Pat Turner, Robin Tyler, and Donnie Kuhns (Kathy), as well as his dedicated caregiver for the past three years, Mr. Oliver Williams of Hospice Savannah.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his siblings, Sally Foy and Randy Kuhns, and brothers-in-law, Richard Tyler and Claude Turner.
Jim dedicated 40 years of service to Southern States Chemical, retiring as a Plant Supervisor. His commitment to his work mirrored his dedication to his family, always acting as a loving and faithful husband, father, and grandfather. Known for his unwavering protective nature, Jim was an excellent provider and a hard worker.
Beyond his professional life, Jim was an avid amateur astronomer. He demonstrated remarkable creativity and craftsmanship in building his own telescope and observatory, a project he completed with his late brother Randy. His passion for the stars was an inspiration to those around him.
A devout member of Bible Baptist Church for 70 years, Jim served his congregation as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, and church quartet singer. His faith drove him to volunteer with Meals on Wheels, further showcasing his commitment to helping others.
A graveside service to celebrate Jim's life will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026, at 11:00 am at Hillcrest Abbey West in Savannah, GA. Arrangements are being handled by Flanders Powell Funeral Home & Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jim's honor to Hospice Savannah, where he received compassionate care in his final years.
