Erin Gardner

Erin Virginia Gardner, what a woman! It's incredibly sad to say goodbye to someone who lived such an absolutely vibrant and adventurous life. Erin, who was born way back on September 7, 1930, in McIntosh County, Georgia, was truly one of a kind. She was the cherished daughter of Hardee Myrick and Emma Lane Edwards Gardner, and even from her early days at Black Creek School and Brewton Parker High School, you could tell she was destined for big things.

She started her college journey at Wake Forest University, originally planning to become a doctor. But, as fate would have it, a frog dissection in biology class — and a strong dislike for the sight of blood — quickly showed her that a medical career wasn't quite her calling. Little did she know, this small moment was just a hint of the amazing, unconventional path she was about to take!

Erin's adventurous spirit definitely couldn't be kept on the ground for long! She'd often tell the hilarious story of her very first flight, soaring high in a crop duster with a boyfriend at the controls. She always credited that daring experience to the fearless energy of youth, and it totally sparked a lifelong love affair with the sky. A friend eventually convinced her to head to Kansas City for stewardess school, and after some serious training, she landed her first job with Pioneer Airlines. She loved to recount her first flight on a twin-engine DC-3, where she served a plane full of what she cheekily called "good-looking Texas ranch owners." Not to mention Erin was highly blessed with looks herself . We can only imagine the laughter on this flight. The only hiccup? The airline found out she was a little under 21, ( maybe around 16), the minimum age, which meant a temporary break from flying.

But you couldn't stop Erin once she had her mind set on something! This brief grounding only made her more determined. By 1953, she had her private pilot's license and was flying single-engine planes expertly. Her passion for aviation was cemented when she bought her very own Cessna 150, which became her favorite way to get around. Folks in Blitchton, Georgia, still whisper about her incredible aerial displays, including daring aerobatic maneuvers over Blitchton that perfectly showed off her amazing skill and bold spirit.

Erin wasn't just flying planes; she was also a total whiz in the travel world. From 1960 to 1970, she brilliantly ran Boca Travel, turning it into one of the most successful agencies in the city. Then, she opened Erin Gardner Travel, where she personally designed and hosted unique, custom tours. She took countless people on incredible journeys across the globe, sharing her deep love for exploration and discovering new cultures.

Everyone who knew Erin would tell you she was an absolute riot – full of life, sharp-witted, and an incredible storyteller. Seriously, "there was never a dull moment when Erin was around!" Her life was packed with wild tales, which she'd tell with such infectious joy. Like the time she spent two weeks racing on the Autobahn in Europe in her Jaguar – pure exhilaration! But perhaps even more legendary was the story of her high-speed chase with state troopers on a Mississippi Interstate. With her signature quick thinking, Erin calmly merged her car into an unsuspecting funeral procession. As the funeral party exited the interstate, the confused officers sped right past her, none the wiser! She'd finish the story with a triumphant laugh, explaining how she simply continued with the funeral party to the cemetery, patiently waiting for the coast to clear by attending a graveside service, and enjoying lunch and fellowship with the deceased family. . . Laughing she told “ I made a contribution to the church in the deceased's memory, I was invited to come back to visit any time. I proceeded on with my journey. These stories perfectly capture her audacious spirit and incredible zest for life.

Her passions weren't limited to travel and flying; she was an active member of The Florida Jaguar Racing Club, Friends Club, and The Caldwell Playhouse. The Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association Club, The Society of Ireland in Florida, and The Zonta Club Her extraordinary life and achievements even earned her a spot in "Who's Who," which is a testament to her unique impact.

We'll always remember and cherish Erin for her profound wanderlust, her boundless kindness, and her amazing ability to charm and inspire everyone she met. She leaves behind a loving family, including her nieces, nephews and cousin who will undoubtedly carry on her adventurous legacy.

A graveside service, a final tribute to her remarkable life, will be held at the Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, located on 55 Heape Drive, Ellabell, GA 31308 on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 11:00 am with Deacon Ricky Edwards officiating.

Matthew 25:21, His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
