Obituary

Edith Evette Dickerson Bennett, cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, left this world peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at the age of 76. Evette was a beloved resident of Pembroke, Georgia, where she touched many lives with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit and was a longtime member of Lawrence Baptist Church. Born on Monday, April 24, 1950, Evette's journey through life was marked by love, dedication, and a commitment to family and education.

Evette was the beloved wife of the late John Garland Bennett, with whom she shared 52 years of marriage filled with joy and adventure. Together, they built a life centered on family and community. Evette was preceded in death by her loving husband, Garland, her parents, Harold V. Dickerson and Doris Smith Dickerson and brother, Hal Dickerson.

Evette's passion for nurturing young minds was evident in her longstanding career with the Effingham Board of Education, where she spent 20 years as a dedicated third-grade teacher at Guyton Elementary. She held a degree in Early Childhood Education from Georgia Southern University and was remembered by colleagues and students alike for her patience, creativity, and ability to inspire.

A woman of varied interests, Edith found joy in bird watching, feeding neighborhood cats, shopping, reading, and indulging in her favorite treats—ice cream and Klondike bars. Above all, she treasured spending time with her family, who were the heart of her world.

Evette is survived by her two loving daughters, Kim Jackson and her husband Maurice of Statesboro and Karey Butler and her fiancé Neil Adams of Pembroke, . Her legacy continues through her five cherished grandchildren, Justin Jackson (Anna), Hilarie Jackson (Ty), Ashlyn Butler, Grayson Butler, and Jarrett Butler, and three adored great-grandchildren, Virginia Jackson, Jett Jackson, and McCay Jackson.

Visitation will be held at Lawrence Baptist Church on Monday, October 19, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed immediately by a funeral service officiated by Brother Albert Hodges and Reverend Dan Bryant at 11:00 am.
