It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Dorothy Ann Carter Butler Murphy, a long time citizen of Guyton, Georgia. She moved back to near the home place below Stilson after the passing of her husband in 2005. Born in Stilson, Georgia on Tuesday, August 21, 1934, Dorothy lived a life filled with love, service, and dedication until her peaceful passing at age 91 on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Dorothy's journey through life was filled with hard work and dedication. As a 20 plus year Postal Carrier for the United States Postal Service in Guyton, GA. She delivered packages down dirt roads that slowly turned to asphalt.
In addition to her professional life, Dorothy was a member of Guyton Methodist Church and the Red Hat Society. She and her husband, Vance, also known as Son, traveled, camped and fished together until their later years slowed them down. Her interests were diverse, and she spent many hours indulging in reading, crocheting beautiful pieces, solving puzzles, and enjoying the quiet beauty of fishing in the Ogeechee River.
Her memory will be cherished by those she leaves behind, including three cherished grandchildren, Dana Butler (Eddie Sites), Kerri Butler, and Kyle Butler (Kayla), "Gran Dot" adored her great-children Clay and Colt Sites, and Buckley Butler. Dorothy is also survived by her loving sister, Sharon Edenfield (Gerald), nieces Sharri Edenfield Lindsey (Bill) and Kristie Edenfield Piasta (Ed), and nephew Gerry Edenfield. A step-son Billy Murphy and his wife Terri, and a step-grandson, Jonathan Murphy. Her presence will also be warmly missed by her daughter-in-law, Frances Butler.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel DeFoe Carter and Alice Lee Newman Carter; her beloved husbands, Paul Alvis Butler and Vance "Son" Murphy; sons Paul Butler Jr. and Roger L. Butler; step-grandson Zak Murphy, and her brother, Donald "Bunk" Carter.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Dorothy's life will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 11:00 am at Lower Black Creek Cemetery in Ellabell, GA. Arrangements have been entrusted to Flanders Powell Funeral Home & Crematory.
Mrs Dot lived a life filled with boundless love, laughter, and generosity. She will be missed, but will be remembered by those she left behind.
