C.E. Cowart

Pembroke
Mr. C. E. “Gene” Cowart, 79, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bryan County on March 2, 1936 to the late Carlos and Lillie Mae Cowart. Mr. Cowart was a typesetter and printer with Savannah Printing with over 60 years of service.  He was a lifelong member of the Pembroke United Methodist Church where he was the former president of the Men’s Club, was recognized as the 2013 Man of the Year, and served as youth counselor for MYF.  Mr. Cowart was a founding member of the Pembroke Jaycees, a councilman for the city of Pembroke from 1976 – 1990, Mayor from 1990 – 1995.  He was a member of the Pembroke Masonic Lodge #469 F&AM, Alee Shriners where he served with the Patrol, was a Personal Aid, member of the Divan and Past Potentate.  Mr. Cowart was a charter member of the Bryan County Shrine Club, past President and the current Secretary of the club. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and had a wonderful sense of humor.

He preceded in death by a daughter, Teressa Cowart Sanders and sister, Kay DeLoach Martin.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Montene Smith Cowart; sons, Steven Cowart (Crystal) and Mark Cowart (Jolene) both of Ellabell; daughter, Diane Lightsey (Nelson) of Statesboro; brother, Bobby Cowart of Pembroke; sister, Jewel Owens of Pembroke; 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 27, 2015 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Pembroke First Baptist Church with Rev. Matt Avera officiating.

Burial will follow at Northside Cemetery.
