Carey Dixon Roberts

Mr. Carey Dixon Roberts, age 76, died Sunday, July 13th at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Carey was a resident of Bryan County for 69 years and proudly served as County Commissioner from 1988 till 1990. He was a 1967 graduate of Bryan County High School and an avid Redskin fan. He was the oldest of Leland Benjamin and Desma Harris Roberts’ eight children.

Following graduation, Carey enlisted in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. As a proud patriot, he served for 21 years until his honorable discharge in 1988. Carey was a veteran that loved his country and cherished celebrating the 4th of July with his friends and family. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 26 from 1980 until 2012. While working with the union, he accepted a full-time job at Arizona Chemical as a welder from 1991 until his retirement in 2012.

He was widely known as one of those special characters who made almost any event a true comedy show. He was especially famous for sharing his “Uncle Lamar” stories. Carey was a member of Bryan Hunting Club where he loved to hear the dogs running. “Cyclone” loved putting on a show with his wild, skillful driving and teaching others how to do the “turn around trick”.

Carey’s main hobbies were watching NASCAR when “Awesome” Bill Elliott was on the track, and cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs. He loved keeping up with the Dawgs year-round, no matter the sport or season. He was a true craftsman and mechanic, willing and able to build or repair anything. He was a proud and ardent supporter of the Ford Motor Company and Snapping Turtle lawnmowers. His roots were extremely important to him. Carey loved researching the historical importance of his family, church, and community.

After giving his life to Jesus in 1980, Carey was a dedicated Christian that tried to reflect Christ in every aspect of his life. Together with his wife, they built a life that exemplified God’s design for the family. He played a major role in Olive Branch Baptist Church where he attended and served faithfully for 45 years. He held various leadership and teaching roles throughout the years, and was ordained as a deacon in 1997.

Carey personified the Good Samaritan by selflessly giving his time, money, and possessions. He loved making a personal connection with everyone he met, visiting the sick and the elderly, and was genuinely passionate about helping those in need. Well done, thy good and faithful servant.

In addition to his parents, Carey was predeceased by his two sisters, Debbie Collins and Sue Long. Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Teresa Dasher Roberts; three children: Carey Michael Roberts and his wife Kerri of Perry, Rachel Roberts Howell and her husband BJ of Ellabell, Timothy Lamar Roberts and his wife Chelsea of Ellabell; a son he embraced as his own: Robert (Olivia) Shaul of Ellabell, brother, Mark (Sandra) Roberts, four sisters: Sheryl (Michael) Horowitz of Savannah, Cathy (Art) Tarver of Pembroke, Tammy (Travis) Minis of Ellabell, Pam (Jim) Baker of Ellabell; six grandchildren: Dylan Roberts, Lacey and Luke Howell, Sadie, Matthew and Elly Roberts; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
